Web System vs Web App—How do we define our consulting services?

While “Web App” is the term that the industry tends to use after 2010, Studio theYANG sticks to the concept of “Web System” for a reason. By this article, we hope to clarify our vision of web industry in the new decade.

From the word itself, a “system” always sounds mechanical and sophisticated, while an “app” sounds snappy and user-oriented. In essence, they are faced with intrinsically different end-users.

Recall the terms “B2B” and “B2C” in online commerce. We fairly say that web systems are more involved in “to B” businesses while web apps in “to C” businesses.

Analogy: Web App is like B2C

B2C merchants face with individual and sporadic shoppers in their downstream. There could be thousands or millions of specific needs that ordinary shoppers wish to have but the merchant may not satisfy at 100%. The individual clients, however, can also live with the product that is not perfect for them, but useful enough.

When we call it “web app”, we usually have it faced to ordinary users. The main emphasis is on interaction and retainability. And just like a great good, the web app has to be polished as much as it could be, and updated very meticulously.

The implication of web app is the same as in B2C: the development team must listen to many of their users, and try to gather information from users as much as possible. The team’s job has much further than technical development; it needs superior UI/UX, comprehensive alpha testing, complete feedback loop from users… For us who work at Studio theYANG and are uniquely of technical experts, web app implies too heavily to make it perfect.

Analogy: Web System is like B2B

On the other hand, B2B merchants care about the system in its overall sense and focus on the long-term maintainability. They try to resolve a particular and evasive inefficiency along the supply chain. Again, the solution may not be 100% perfect, but can substantially improve their actual situation.

From the beginning of Studio theYANG in 2018, our focus has always been on web systems that share the same concept as B2B business. In our eyes, a web system is a powerful workhorse for a particular business scenario, with the end of helping with our client’s productivity and profitability.

Just like a computer operating system integrates all internal parts and peripheral devices, a web system would make the most sense when it’s put together with the business’s established routines, where it acts as a central hub among the business’s infrastructures, because software is innately versatile to be reprogrammed, and web protocol opens up infinite possibilities of intercommunication.

Our Consulting Services on Web Systems

By concentrating on web systems, we, at Studio theYANG, have the opportunity to apply our excellence in computer systems and networks, for our clients’ businesses that face with new challenges every day. Our essential job is to assist our clients with their needs and aspirations.

Thus we define Studio theYANG’s services as “consulting”, because deep understanding of our clients is such an important part in our work on their web system. We act as both engineer and technical advisor for our clients, and we strive to add values into the whole process.

We also invest in the future of the B2B-like concept of web systems under the advent of Industry 4.0, where connection sits at the center of everything. In the future world where the “things” are increasingly connected, we believe that the value behind the term “web systems” will be further elevated.
